Alistair Munro
Alistair is an experienced designer and modeler of distributed algorithms and protocols focussing on the engineering and performance analysis of networked communications systems for quality of service, grade of service, interoperability, and verification of protocols.
He has a wide knowledge of communications technologies and standards, spanning fixed and wireless, circuit and packet-mode, and protocols from physical layer to application layer, with in-depth knowledge of the Internet and its protocols, and their use in a wide range of applications.
He was technical lead of the ASTRAEA communications and security programme for Remotely-Piloted Aircraft Systems integration in non-segregated airspace.
He has initiated, procured and executed research projects in collaboration with many of the major global technology companies, UK government departments and agencies, and the European Commission. He has complete experience of the overall R&T/R&D process from concept and bid development, technical requirements analysis, solution specification and implementation, and verification and performance evaluation.
He is a long-term expert advisor to the European Commission in the development and execution of framework research programmes (e.g. FP7, H2020). He has significant responsibility in standards bodies in communications and aviation including ISO, ETSI Eurocae and ICAO.
His previous employment has been in the academic domain, initially as a developer of distributed networked applications for the UK academic community, then as a researcher in wireless mobile communications, and recently as a teacher and research manager at Professorial level. He was a contributor to the design and implementation of the first large scale IP network in the UK for the Universities.
